New Sidewalk to be Constructed Along Maine Avenue with $3 Million FDOT Funding
by James Coulter
Pedestrians traveling along Main Avenue in Lakeland will be able to walk on new sidewalks now that the county is set to receive more than $3 million from the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT).

At their meeting on Tues, Mar. 18, the Board of County Commissioners (BoCC) of Polk County voted unanimously to approve a resolution approving the Local Agency Program (LAP) Agreement between Polk County and FDOT for the Maine Avenue Sidewalk Project.
The funding will go towards the construction of approximately 0.9 miles of new concrete sidewalk along Maine Avenue from Combee Road to Reynolds Road. The construction contract is expected to be awarded early this summer.
The sidewalk will be five to six feet wide, ADA compliant, and include, according to the city agenda memo, “crosswalks along the south side of Maine Avenue, limited areas of curb and gutter and retaining walls, and minor improvements to the existing drainage system.”
The LAP agreement will provide a total of $3,228,442 in funding, which includes $3,100,293 for construction and $128,149 for CEI services. All expenses in excess and deficits incurred will be placed upon Polk County.
