Polk County Sheriff’s Office Investigating Fatal Hit-and-Run in Winter Haven

The PCSO Traffic Homicide Unit is investigating a hit-and-run fatality that occurred Thursday evening, Feb. 8, 2024, around 11:20 p.m. on Winter Lake Road in Winter Haven just west of Old Eagle Lake Road and US 17.

47-year-old Michael Ratton, who is a well-known homeless man in the area, was riding his pink adult tricycle across Winter Lake Road from south to north when he was struck by an unknown, possibly commercial, vehicle. He was declared deceased at the scene.

There were no witnesses to the crash – the victim was seen lying on the side of the road by a passerby, who called PCSO.
