Warrant for Woman Who Participated in Grandparent Scam

Winter Haven Police have obtained a warrant for the arrest of 32 year-old Catherine Palacio of Orlando after she worked with another person to scam a Winter Haven couple by using the ruse known as The Grandparent Scam.
Our victim was contacted by telephone from someone claiming to be a defense attorney and that the victim’s granddaughter had been arrested for a traffic offense and she needed $10,000 to be bonded from jail.
The instructions from the caller were for the victim to withdraw the money in $100 denominations and place in an envelope and put the envelope in his mailbox, “to avoid contact for COVID-19.” The caller stated an associate would pick up the money.
A short time afterwards, a white SUV with a Hispanic female, later identified as Palacio, arrives, has a brief encounter with the wife and then goes to the mailbox removing the envelope. Contact was eventually made with the granddaughter and she confirmed that she had not been arrested.
Video footage from the entrance of the subdivision shows the white Toyota RAV4 with tag 45ATCV entering and exiting, which is registered to Palacio.
Detectives want to remind everyone that these scam artists are continuing to operate and will continue finding unsuspecting victims. If this type of call is ever received, attempt to contact the family member and call authorities. Don’t withdraw money no matter how convincing someone is until you can 100% verify legitimacy.
Anyone with information on where Palacio is, please contact Detective Wile at 863-662-0392.
