On Monday, June 13th, the City Commission proclaimed June 19th, 2022, as Juneteenth Day in the City of Winter Haven, Florida, in commemoration of the day that freedom was declared to all enslaved in the south by Major Emery and the United States Colored Troops in Galveston, Texas. This was more than two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation by President Abraham Lincoln. Mayor Dantzler also encouraged the entire Winter Haven community to participate in the celebration of African American culture, history, and pride through the 2022 Juneteenth Celebration!
The Juneteenth Celebration Committee joined City staff and commissioners to accept the proclamation.
