Local Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Center Participates in Tap Cancer Out Jiu Jitsu Tournament

Tap Cancer Out is a Jiu Jitsu tournament that holds a special importance to members of Carlson Gracie Winter Haven. All proceeds from this tournament directly benefit various cancer organizations. Since 2012, this program has brought in more than 3.5 million dollars to give back to the groups they work directly with.

Andrew Kinchen is Owner/Head Instructor of Carlson Gracie Winter Haven and Instructor at Carlson Gracie Lakeland. His team has a direct involvement with Tap Cancer Out.

“Our team raises funds through car washes, T-shirt sales and donations,” Kinchen said. “The money raised for each tournament (multiple tournaments throughout the country) is donated to a select group of Cancer Related Charities.”

In 2021, Carlson Gracie was the second highest fundraising team. For this they earned tournament recognition and were given a banner to be proudly displayed at the Carlson Gracie school.

This program is important to the members at Carlson Gracie. It is 100% to help others and give back. “We raise money each year to fight for those who have been affected by cancer,” Kinchen said.” Both Tony Roberts as well as Andrew Kinchen have lost loved ones to cancer so they continue to fight and help others suffering from cancer as well as help their families.

Tap Cancer Out is very near and dear to Kinchen’s heart especially. His father was recently diagnosed in 2021 with Leukemia, where he later passed.

“Having the short intense experience with what the families go through, the expense of hotel rooms and treatments was such an eye-opening experience for what so many go through each year,” Kinchen said. “For the 2019 Tap Cancer Out Tournament we fought in memory of Tony Roberts Sr, father of Tony Roberts Jr from our Lakeland Academy. Each year we raise funds to try and take some of the burden off of those who are fighting these horrible illnesses. We fight alongside those who need our strength and fight in memory of those we’ve lost.”

The next event for Tap Cancer Out will be held on September 17 at the Advent Health Fieldhouse in Winter Haven.
