Marine Supply Celebrates 70th Anniversary
by James Coulter
For the past seven decades, Marine Supply, the Boating Center has provided everybody’s boating needs with everything from boat sales, repairs, and parts. The Winter Haven boating supply store celebrated its 70th anniversary with a major celebration last Thursday.
Even despite the grey skies and rainy weather that afternoon, Marine Supply drew in large crowds to celebrate its milestone with live music, raffles, several dozen vendors, and good food provided by The Brack Shack. Customers old and new dropped by to show their appreciation.
Trisha Gurr currently owns and operates Marine Supply, the Boating Center with her father. Her family’s business was opened as a local bait shop in 1952 by her father and uncle. Over the years, it has grown and evolved into a boat supply store that offers boat vehicles, parts, and repairs. She now runs it alongside her father.
Their commitment to quality customer service has allowed them to exist over the past seven decades and counting. They go above and beyond to meet customer needs, and the large turnout last Thursday proved how much their customers appreciate it, Gurr said.
“I think it is the family business and we never say no to a customer,” she said. “We believe the customer is always right. We always try to offer customer service so we never want to disappoint customers. We have had customers that for generations have been buying goods for us and they are part of our family.”
Their reviews on Facebook serve as a testament to their commitment to providing customer service. One reviewer boasted about how happy they were to have their boat in the water as soon as they bought it.
“I purchased my boat from you guys and it was a great experience,” they wrote. “Boat was in the water ready for a test ride, after the purchase I received my title and tag as promised. This was a great transaction and I will keep you guys in mind when I buy my next boat. Great job, I would recommend them in a heartbeat.”
Many of the sales representatives there are so well-renowned for their hospitality that many happy customers name them in their reviews, as was the case for the salesman Bob Robinson “He is a great salesman. I talked to him so much he seemed like a longtime friend. He went out of his way to accommodate me. I saw a video he posted on Facebook and I knew immediately that was who I wanted to deal with.”
The past few years have proven to be quite a challenge, but also a blessing in disguise, with many customers using the pandemic as an excuse to get out into the water and “self-isolate” away from the outside world, Gurr said.
“It has people to reacquaint themselves with the Chain of Lakes on Winter Haven,” she said. “So, it benefited us and them and changed people’s lives from sitting inside on the weekend to spending time with their whole families and enjoying the beautiful nature of our Chain of Lakes.”
Gurr has high expectations for the upcoming years. She hopes her family’s business will continue to grow and flourish. With their commitment to being an all-in-one boat shop, she expects to do just that.
“We can service your boat, trade your boat, do the whole thing…you can buy it, leave it here, put it in the water, do all that as a one-stop-shop,” she said. “I think it is good since people are moving into Polk County…it is very positive how many new customers we are getting.”
